Do I need a specific pickaxe to use Gouge Mod or does any pickaxe work?

Any pickaxe works, but higher-tier pickaxes (like diamond or netherite) hold onto walls much longer and consume less durability per use. Wood and stone pickaxes will slip off quickly, so they're less reliable for deep cave exploration.

What's the difference between grabbing stone versus dirt when falling?

Hard blocks like stone and obsidian stop your fall completely and let you hang in place indefinitely (until durability runs out). Soft blocks like dirt and sand slow your descent smoothly while cutting fall damage in half, but won't lock you in place.

How do I let go of a wall without taking damage?

Double-tap your Crouch key within 0.7 seconds to kick yourself off the wall and leap away safely. This works at any time while you're gripping, giving you full control over when to release.

Can I grab a wall if I'm not falling or moving downward?

The mod is designed for mid-fall scenarios, so you need active downward momentum to grab a wall effectively. Trying to grab while standing still or moving sideways won't trigger the catch mechanic.
