How to Build a Rune Trap for Mobs

Choosing the Right Rune

A mob trap uses a rune that triggers when an entity steps on it. Damage, slow, or teleport runes work best. Draw the rune on the floor of a corridor or pit where mobs path through naturally. Avoid open areas, because mobs may walk around the pattern instead of over it.

Funnel the Mobs

Build walls or use water streams to force mobs onto the rune. A one-block-wide corridor is ideal. Place the rune at the end of the corridor so mobs must cross it to reach you or your bait. If the rune requires a sacrifice, put the sacrifice item on a pressure plate or in a hopper that drops it onto the pattern when a mob approaches.

Refreshing the Trap

Some runes are consumed on activation and must be redrawn. Keep a supply of dust nearby and a clear path so you can redraw quickly between waves. If the rune is reusable, add a cooldown timer using redstone so it does not fire faster than it can handle. Test the trap with a single mob before opening it to a full spawner, and adjust the corridor length so mobs cannot jump over the rune.
