How to Make Your Farmers Replant Modded Crops Automatically

Why vanilla farmers fail with modded crops

Vanilla villagers only know the crops they were coded with. When a modded crop is harvested, the villager often leaves the seed on the ground or plants the wrong item, and the farm slowly dies out. Smarter Farmers fixes this by teaching the farmer to look up the correct seed for whatever crop it just broke, including seeds from other mods.

Getting a farmer to replant correctly

1. Build a standard farm plot and place a composter nearby so a villager can claim the farmer profession.

2. Give the farmer the modded seeds by dropping them on the ground inside the farm area, or by letting the farmer pick them up from a chest it can reach.

3. Instead of dropping the seed, it will now walk to an empty farmland block and plant the matching seed.

4. If a crop still is not replanted, check that the seed item is registered as a plantable seed in that mod. Smarter Farmers can only match seeds that the game itself recognises as the crop's seed.

Tips for mixed farms

You can mix vanilla and modded crops in the same plot. The farmer handles each crop individually, so wheat, carrots and modded plants can share one field without the farmer confusing the seeds. Keep the plot flat and well lit so the farmer does not get stuck pathing between rows.
