Unbound Visual Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on path-tracing?
Open the shader settings menu (usually Shift + R by default), navigate to the Lighting section, and enable Path-Tracing. Start with lower sample counts if your frame rate drops, then increase them gradually for better quality.
Why do my metals and shiny blocks look flat?
Make sure your resource pack supports PBR textures—Unbound Visual relies on metallic and roughness maps in the texture files. If using a vanilla or non-PBR pack, blocks will render with default properties; switch to a PBR-compatible pack to see the full effect.
What's the difference between Complementary Unbound and Unbound Visual?
Unbound Visual adds path-tracing and enhanced PBR rendering on top of Complementary Unbound's base, giving you more realistic light bouncing and material appearance at the cost of higher performance demands.
My FPS is terrible. How do I make it playable?
Lower path-tracing samples, reduce render distance, disable or lower ambient occlusion quality, and turn off expensive effects like volumetric lighting. Check the Performance guide for step-by-step optimization without losing too much visual quality.
Why does water look weird or too reflective?
Adjust the water reflection and refraction settings in the shader menu—you can control how much the water reflects the sky and surroundings. If reflections are broken, ensure your resource pack includes proper water normal maps.
Can I use this shader with Sodium or other performance mods?
Unbound Visual is designed for Iris, which works alongside Sodium; install both together for the best performance. Other optimization mods like Lithium and Starlight are generally compatible, but avoid mods that conflict with rendering.
Do I need a specific resource pack for this shader to work?
The shader works with any pack, but you'll see the full PBR and reflection effects only with packs that include metallic and roughness textures. Vanilla textures will still look good, just less shiny and detailed.
How do I adjust how shiny or rough a material looks?
Open shader settings and find the PBR or Material section where you can tweak metallic and roughness values globally, or use a resource pack editor to modify individual block textures for finer control.
Is this shader compatible with mods that add new blocks?
Yes, new blocks will render with the shader, but they'll use default PBR values unless the mod or a resource pack provides custom metallic and roughness textures for them.
Why do caves and dark areas look too bright or too dark?
Adjust the ambient light and exposure settings in the shader menu to balance dark and lit areas. Path-tracing can sometimes over-brighten caves; lowering sample counts or tweaking light bounce settings helps.
