Making More Mobs Variants Work on a Server Without Client Mods
Why it works server-side
More Mobs is fully server-side. The transformations are driven by custom player head data that vanilla clients already understand, so you do not need to push a modpack to your players. Install it on the server only and the new mobs appear for everyone.
Setup steps
1. Drop the mod into your server's mods folder and restart.
2. Confirm the heads are obtainable — check loot tables or your server's config for head drops.
3. Test with one player using an unmodded client: spawn a zombie, apply a head, and verify the variant renders.
4. If you want the full visual experience (custom textures/animations), players can optionally install it client-side too, but it is not required.
Things to watch
- Some variants may rely on resource-pack textures. If a variant looks like a plain player head, that is expected on a vanilla client — the behavior still changes.
- Keep the mod version consistent across server restarts to avoid mismatched head IDs.
- Back up your world before mass-converting mobs, since variants can have different drops and AI.
