Using No-Shading Lighting for Builds, Screenshots and Maps
Why builders want it
Removing face shading gives flat, poster-like lighting that makes colour palettes read accurately and stops large flat walls from looking gradient-heavy. It is popular for modern and minimalist builds, pixel art, map-making, and clean screenshot backgrounds.
Practical build tips
1. Because every face is equally bright, texture contrast does all the work. Mix blocks with clearly different textures rather than relying on light and shadow to separate surfaces.
2. Use actual light sources (torches, lanterns, glowstone) to create focal points, since ambient shading no longer helps guide the eye.
3. For screenshots, pick a time of day and stick to it — with shading removed, the difference between noon and dusk is mostly colour tint rather than shadow.
4. When building interiors, add trim, slabs, and stairs to define edges; without shading, flat corners can visually merge.
For map makers
Test your map with the mod both on and off if you plan to share it, because players without the mod will see the original shaded version and your lighting choices may read differently. Keep important details distinguishable in both cases.
