How to Disguise Items Until a Progression Milestone

Mapping Items in a Revelation

Besides blocks, revelations can map items to disguised representations. In your revelation JSON, add an items mapping that pairs the disguised item with the real item. Until the gating advancement is earned, players see and hold the disguised item; once earned, the same slot shows the real item. This is useful for hiding powerful gear behind progression.

Choosing the Gating Advancement

Pick an advancement that represents the milestone you want. It can be a vanilla advancement or one you author. The revelation only cares about the advancement ID, so you can reuse existing progression points without writing new criteria. If you want a custom milestone, create an advancement with a trigger that matches your pack's flow.

Verifying the Swap

After /reload, give yourself the disguised item and confirm it looks correct. Then grant the advancement and check that the item updates in your inventory, in containers, and in your hand. Note that the swap is per player, so another player without the advancement still sees the disguised form. If the item does not change, double-check the item IDs and that the advancement is actually being granted.
