How to Use Nvidium Together With Shaders (and Why You Usually Can't)
A common question is whether Nvidium and shaders can run at the same time. The short answer is no, but it helps to understand the behavior so you can plan your setup.
Why They Conflict
Nvidium replaces
Sodium's rendering with its own OpenGL implementation built specifically for Nvidia GPUs. Shaders, delivered through Iris, hook into the rendering pipeline in a way that is incompatible with Nvidium's approach. Because of this, the two cannot operate simultaneously.
What Happens When You Apply Shaders
If Iris is installed and you select a shader pack, Nvidium automatically disables itself. You do not need to remove the mod; it simply steps aside. Your performance will then reflect the shader pack's cost rather than Nvidium's optimization. When you turn shaders back off and restart, Nvidium can re-engage.
Choosing Between Them
Decide based on what you want from the session:
- For maximum frame rate and smooth performance on large render distances, keep shaders off and let Nvidium run.
- For visual effects and lighting, enable shaders and accept that Nvidium will be inactive.
You can switch between the two by toggling your shader pack and restarting the game. There is no configuration that lets both run together, so treat them as two separate modes for two different goals.
