Using Descriptions to Identify Unknown Modded Items

Why This Helps

When you play a large modpack, your inventory fills with items you have never seen. Instead of alt-tabbing to a wiki, hold Ctrl over the item and read the description. This is the fastest way to triage a chest full of unknown loot.

A Practical Workflow

1. Open the chest or your inventory.

2. Hover each unfamiliar item and hold Ctrl.

3. Read the description for a use, source, or category hint.

4. Sort items into piles: known-use, unknown-but-categorized, and junk.

Handling Generic Tag Descriptions

Modded blocks that the mod does not have a custom entry for fall back to a generic description based on their tags. These are less specific but still useful — they tell you whether something is, for example, a storage block, an ore, or a decorative variant. Treat a generic description as a category label, not a full explanation, and combine it with the item's name and the mod it comes from to decide what to do with it.

Cross-Checking

If a description is vague, compare it with the item's crafting usage in JEI/REI. The description tells you what it is; the recipe viewer tells you what it makes. Together they cover almost every identification question you will hit while exploring a new pack.
