How to View Item Descriptions In-Game

The Basic Keybind

Hover your cursor over any item, block, or entity in an inventory, chest, hotbar, or recipe book screen, then hold the Ctrl key. A tooltip panel appears alongside the normal item name, showing the description text. Release Ctrl and it disappears. You do not need to click or right-click — just hover and hold.

If Nothing Appears

Some items intentionally have no description, especially certain technical or debug items. If a description fails to show on a normal item, check these in order:

1. Make sure you are actually hovering the item's icon, not the empty slot next to it.

2. Confirm no other mod has rebound Ctrl (common with sprint or zoom mods). Check your controls menu for conflicts.

3. Try a different screen — descriptions render in most GUI screens but a few custom mod GUIs may not support them.

4. Reload the game; description data is loaded at startup and a broken load can blank all tooltips.

Reading the Description

Descriptions are short by design — usually one or two lines covering what the item does, where it comes from, or what it is used for. For modded blocks that lack a hand-written entry, you will often see a generic tag-based description instead, which still tells you the broad category the block belongs to.
