Understand How Fleeing Distance and Awareness Work
Mob Awareness Mechanics
Passive mobs detect threats based on proximity. When one mob is attacked, only nearby entities within a certain range will flee. Mobs further away remain unaffected.
Factors Affecting Fleeing
- Distance from attacked mob — closer mobs react faster and more reliably
- Line of sight — some mobs may need clear visibility to detect the threat
- Mob type — different passive animals may have slightly different awareness ranges
- Continuous threat — mobs stay fleeing longer if you keep attacking
Practical Applications
1. Test awareness range — attack one mob and note how far others react
2. Use distance strategically — separate mobs by moving them far apart before combat
3. Predict herd behavior — expect mobs within a few blocks to flee together
4. Plan farm layouts — space pens far enough apart that one group's panic doesn't trigger another
This awareness creates realistic group dynamics without affecting individual mob stats or spawn rates.
