Custom Background HD Resource Pack FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I change the background in Custom Background HD?
Open the resource pack zip and navigate to assets/minecraft/textures/gui/title/background/. Replace panorama_overlay.png with your own image, keeping the exact same filename, then apply the pack in-game.
What image format does the background need to be?
It must be a PNG file. Other formats like JPG or WEBP won't be read by the game, so convert your image to PNG before replacing the file.
Does the image have to be a specific size?
No strict size is required, but the image gets stretched to fill the menu screen. Match your screen's aspect ratio and use a high-resolution image so it doesn't look blurry or distorted.
Why isn't my custom background showing up?
The most common causes are a wrong filename, wrong file location inside the zip, or the pack not being applied or moved to the top of the resource pack list. Double-check that your file is named exactly panorama_overlay.png in the correct folder.
Do I need to unzip the resource pack to change the background?
You can edit the file directly inside the zip using an archive tool, or extract it, swap the image, and re-zip it. Either works as long as the folder structure stays the same.
Can I use a screenshot from my own world as the background?
Yes. Take a screenshot in-game, convert it to PNG if needed, rename it to panorama_overlay.png, and drop it into the background folder inside the pack.
How do I switch between multiple custom backgrounds?
Make a separate copy of the resource pack for each background image, then enable only the one you want in the resource pack menu. You can also swap the PNG inside the zip each time, but keeping separate packs is faster.
Will a huge HD image hurt my game's performance?
The menu background is only loaded on the title screen, so it has little impact on in-game FPS. Extremely large images may slow down menu loading slightly, so keep the resolution reasonable.
Does Custom Background HD work with other resource packs?
It can, but if another pack also changes the title background, only the topmost pack in the list wins. Place Custom Background HD above other packs if you want your custom image to show.
Why does my background look stretched or cut off?
The game stretches the image to fill the whole menu, so mismatched aspect ratios cause distortion. Use an image with the same aspect ratio as your screen, and keep important details away from the edges.
