How to Read the Minimap Underground and in Caves

Why the Minimap Changes Underground

Xaero's Minimap detects when you are below the surface and switches to a cave-friendly view. Instead of showing the surface terrain (which is useless when you're deep in a ravine), it renders the cave layout around you. This is the feature that makes it invaluable for caving and exploring abandoned mineshafts.

Using It While Caving

As you move through a cave system, watch the minimap to see the shape of tunnels, branching paths, and open caverns near you. The map updates as you explore, effectively drawing a live map of the cave. Use it to:

  • Spot side passages you might otherwise walk past.
  • Avoid doubling back into dead ends.
  • Keep a mental picture of how the tunnels connect.

Combining With Waypoints

Drop a waypoint (press B) at any junction, ore find, or cave entrance you want to remember. Because waypoints persist even when hidden, you can mark a fork in the tunnels and always find your way back to it. This is how you avoid getting lost in sprawling mineshafts.

Adjusting the View

Open the mod's settings to change the minimap size and how much of the cave is shown. A slightly larger map helps in complex cave systems, while a smaller one keeps your screen clear during combat.
