Xaero’s World Map Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I open the world map?
Press M to open the fullscreen world map. Press M again (or Esc) to close it and return to the game.
How do I move around and zoom the map?
Drag with your mouse to pan the map, and scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in and out, similar to Google Maps. Your position is marked on the map so you can always find your way back.
Why is my map blank or only showing a small area?
The map writes itself as you explore, so areas you haven't visited yet stay empty. Walk or fly around to fill in new chunks, and previously explored terrain stays saved for that world, dimension or server.
Is the map different for each world and server?
Yes, the map is stored separately for every world, dimension and server, so your singleplayer world and each multiplayer server keep their own explored terrain. This also means you can't accidentally mix up maps between worlds.
Does the world map work on servers and Realms?
Yes, it works in Singleplayer, Multiplayer and on Realms, and it supports MultiWorld and Lilypadded-style server setups automatically. Each world or dimension you visit on a server gets its own map.
How do I switch to cave mode or the Nether view?
Use the dimension/cave mode controls in the map interface to switch between the surface, cave dimensions and the Nether-style view. Cave mode works like the Nether map, showing the terrain layer you're currently in.
How do I make the map look like vanilla paper maps?
Enable Vanilla Maps mode in the map settings to give the world map the classic paper map look. You can also customize terrain textures and use texture packs, and changing packs updates the whole map, not just newly explored chunks.
Do I need Xaero's Minimap to use the World Map?
No, the World Map works as a standalone mod, which is why it's available separately to keep the Minimap lightweight. However, using both together gives you a much better experience, including shared waypoints.
Why can't I see my waypoints on the world map?
Waypoints are shared between Xaero's Minimap and the World Map, so make sure both mods are installed if you expect them to sync. Check that the waypoint's dimension matches the map you're viewing, since waypoints are per-dimension.
Will the world map hurt my performance or FPS?
The map only renders when you open it, so it has minimal impact during normal gameplay. If you notice lag while the map is open, try zooming in or reducing the amount of terrain shown at once.
