Checking Which Client Versions Your Players Are Using
The command
/viaver list shows every connected player alongside the client version they are running. This is the first thing to check whenever a player reports a bug, because it tells you whether they are on a native version or a ported one being translated by ViaVersion.
Reading the output
- Players on the same version as your server are native — bugs they report are usually server-side or plugin-side.
- Players on a different version are ported — bugs they report are often translation quirks, especially around inventory, particles, or sounds.
- If a player's version looks wrong or blank, they may have just connected; re-run the command.
Using it for support
1. Ask the player to stay online.
2. Run /viaver list and note their version.
3. Cross-reference with the feature they say is broken. If the feature simply didn't exist in their client version, no plugin can show it to them.
4. If many players are on one older version, consider whether supporting that version is worth the translation overhead, or whether you should ask them to update.
