ViaVersion Plugin FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I check if ViaVersion is actually working?
Join your server from a client version newer than the server's native version and run /viaver list; if your name appears with the newer version shown, it's working. If you can't connect at all, the plugin likely isn't loaded or your client is too new for the current build.
Why can't my friend on an older version join my server?
ViaVersion only lets newer clients join older servers, not the reverse. To allow older clients you need to install ViaBackwards, and for very old versions also ViaRewind, alongside ViaVersion.
Do I need ViaVersion on my BungeeCord proxy or on the backend servers?
Install ViaVersion on the proxy itself, not on the backend servers behind it. Putting it on both can cause double protocol conversion and break connections.
What does /viaver list actually show me?
It lists every online player alongside the client version they're connecting with. This is the fastest way to confirm who is on which version and whether protocol translation is happening.
My players are getting weird collision or team glitches on BungeeCord, how do I fix it?
Run /viaver autoteam to toggle collision auto teaming, which is usually the cause of team-related glitches on proxied networks. If issues persist, try disabling it and check whether another team plugin is conflicting.
What is /viaver pps for?
It shows the packets per second being handled for ported (translated) players. Use it to spot whether a specific player's connection is generating abnormal traffic or lag.
When should I use /viaver debug?
Only when asked to by support, typically for diagnosing packet crashes. It prints all packets to the console, which is very noisy, so don't leave it running during normal play.
How do I stop the update notifier from spamming me?
Run /viaver dontbugme to toggle the update notifier off. Run it again to turn notifications back on.
What's the difference between ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind?
ViaVersion lets newer clients join older servers. ViaBackwards extends that so older clients can join newer servers, and ViaRewind adds support for very old client versions on top of ViaBackwards.
Will ViaVersion hurt my server's performance?
It adds some overhead because every packet for a translated player must be converted, so more ported players means more load. Check /viaver pps to see the packet rate and watch your TPS if you have many players on mismatched versions.
