How to Let Players on Older Minecraft Versions Join Your Newer Server
You want friends on older clients to connect to your up-to-date server. ViaBackwards handles the translation, but it needs a
companion plugin to work.
Install the required plugins
1. Stop your server completely.
2. Place the ViaVersion plugin and the ViaBackwards plugin into your server's plugins folder.
3. Start the server once so both plugins generate their config files and folders.
4. Stop the server again, then restart it to confirm both plugins loaded without errors in the console.
Verify older clients can connect
1. Join from a client on a newer version first to confirm the server itself is healthy.
2. Have a player join from an older client (anything from 1.9 upward).
3. Watch the console — ViaBackwards logs translation activity and any packet warnings.
4. If the older player is kicked, check that ViaVersion is present and enabled; ViaBackwards will not function alone.
Set expectations with your players
Older clients will not see newer blocks, items, or mechanics. They may also experience inventory desyncs, especially on very old clients, and some
sounds may map incorrectly. Warn players before they report these as bugs — they are known limitations of translating a newer server down to an older client.
