ViaBackwards Plugin FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I set up ViaBackwards so my older players can join?
Install ViaVersion and ViaBackwards together on the server, then restart. ViaBackwards won't do anything on its own — it depends on ViaVersion to handle the core protocol translation.
Do I need ViaVersion installed for ViaBackwards to work?
Yes. ViaBackwards is an add-on to ViaVersion and will not function without it. Install both plugins and keep them on matching versions.
Which Minecraft versions can connect to my server with ViaBackwards?
Clients from 1.9 up through the server's version can connect. Anything 1.8 or older needs ViaRewind or ProtocolSupport instead.
Why can't my 1.8 players connect even with ViaBackwards?
ViaBackwards only supports clients 1.9 and newer. For 1.8 and below, add ViaRewind (or ProtocolSupport) alongside ViaVersion and ViaBackwards.
Why do older players see missing blocks, items, or sounds?
ViaBackwards translates packets, not content — clients can only render what their own version supports. New blocks, items, and some sounds simply won't appear or play for them.
How do I fix inventory desync for players on very old clients?
Inventory desync is a known limitation for clients below 1.17 and can't be fully eliminated. Ask affected players to relog or reopen the inventory, and keep ViaVersion and ViaBackwards updated to the latest builds.
Why can't my older players use the smithing table on a newer server?
Clients below 1.19.4 don't understand the newer smithing table interface, so the GUI won't open properly. Installing the AxSmithing add-on restores smithing table functionality for those clients.
Does ViaBackwards let older clients use new combat, blocks, or mechanics?
No. It only translates packets so older clients can connect and play; new gameplay features remain invisible and unusable to them. Players on older versions will always be limited to their own version's content.
Will ViaBackwards hurt my server's performance?
Packet translation adds some CPU overhead, especially with many older clients online. It's usually light, but if TPS drops, check that you're not running redundant compatibility plugins and keep ViaVersion/ViaBackwards updated.
Can I use ViaBackwards with other version-compatibility plugins like ProtocolSupport?
Yes, but avoid overlapping setups — use ViaRewind for 1.8 and below rather than stacking multiple translators for the same range. Running conflicting plugins can cause connection errors or duplicate packet handling.
