Fixing Inventory Desync for Players on Very Old Clients

Players on clients below 1.17 often report items appearing in the wrong slots, ghost items, or a hotbar that does not match what the server thinks they hold. This is a known side effect of downgrading newer inventory packets.

Confirm the cause

1. Ask the affected player for their exact client version.

2. If they are below 1.17, the desync is expected behavior from packet translation, not a server bug.

3. Test by having them open and close a chest or their own inventory — if the contents snap back into place, translation is working but lagging behind.

Reduce the impact

1. Have the player reconnect. A fresh login resends the full inventory state and usually clears ghost items.

2. Ask them to avoid rapidly moving stacks while the server is under load, since delayed packets widen the desync window.

3. If desyncs are frequent, encourage the player to update their client to a version at or above 1.17, where inventory handling is more reliable.

When to escalate

If a player on a modern client also sees desyncs, the problem is not ViaBackwards. Check other inventory-related plugins and your server's tick performance before blaming version translation.
