Diagnosing Why an Older Client Cannot Connect at All

When a player on an old client is refused entry, the cause is usually a missing dependency or a version that ViaBackwards does not cover. Work through these checks in order.

Check the client version floor

1. Ask the player their exact version.

2. ViaBackwards supports clients from 1.9 upward. Anything at 1.8 or lower will not connect through it.

3. For those very old clients, you need a different solution such as ViaRewind or ProtocolSupport instead.

Check the dependencies

1. Confirm ViaVersion is installed and enabled — ViaBackwards depends on it.

2. Confirm your server runs Java 8 or newer; both plugins require it.

3. Look at the startup log for lines showing both plugins loaded successfully.

Check for conflicts

1. Temporarily remove other connection-modifying plugins and retest with the old client.

2. If the connection succeeds, reintroduce plugins one at a time to find the conflict.

3. Recheck the console during the failed join — ViaBackwards prints the reason a handshake was rejected.

Last resort

If everything checks out and the client is within the supported range, have the player try a different client build of the same version, as some launchers ship modified clients that break the handshake.
