Various Starting Loot Data Pack FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Why am I not getting any starting loot?
You need to enable the "Bonus Chest" option when creating your world. The data pack modifies the bonus chest loot, so without it enabled, no starting items will appear. If you're using Inventory Chest Mode instead, make sure you ran `/function various_starting_loot:settings` to activate it.
What's the difference between the two modes?
Mode 1 (default) changes what spawns in the bonus chest near your spawn point—you must enable bonus chest in world settings. Mode 2 (Inventory Chest Mode) gives you a chest directly in your inventory when you spawn, and doesn't require bonus chest to be enabled.
How do I switch to Inventory Chest Mode?
Run the command `/function various_starting_loot:settings` in your world, and follow the prompts to enable Mode 2. After this, new players will receive their starting loot as a placeable chest in their inventory instead of a bonus chest at spawn.
Does the starting loot change based on where I spawn?
Yes, the loot is biome-dependent—different biomes provide different starting items suited to that environment. This encourages varied playstyles depending on your spawn location.
Can I use this data pack on an existing world?
Yes, but you'll only receive the biome-based loot if you enable bonus chest before creating the world, or if you use Inventory Chest Mode with `/function various_starting_loot:settings`. Existing players won't retroactively get loot unless you're using Mode 2 and they rejoin.
What happens if I'm in a rare or custom biome?
The data pack includes loot tables for standard Minecraft biomes; behavior in rare or modded biomes depends on how they're classified. If a biome isn't explicitly covered, it may fall back to a default loot table.
Does this work in multiplayer?
Yes, the data pack works on multiplayer servers. In Mode 2, each new player receives their own inventory chest with biome-appropriate loot based on their spawn location.
Can I customize the starting loot myself?
The data pack uses loot tables that can be edited if you're comfortable modifying JSON files in the data pack folder. Refer to the biome-specific loot table files to adjust items and quantities.
Will this conflict with other data packs or mods?
This data pack modifies only the bonus chest loot table, so conflicts are unlikely with most other content. However, other data packs that also modify bonus chest loot may override each other—load order matters.
How do I disable the data pack without deleting it?
You can disable it through your world's data pack menu by removing it from the active list, or by deleting the data pack folder from your world's datapacks directory and reloading. To re-enable, add it back and reload.
