How to Keep Large CIT Packs Fast and Organized
Folder Organization
Variants-CIT is built for performance, but a messy pack still slows you down while editing. Group .properties files by item category (swords, potions, discs) in subfolders under cit. Name files after the variant they produce so you can find them later. Keep textures in a parallel folder structure so paths stay short and readable.
Reducing Redundant Rules
If several items share the same texture logic, reuse a single texture file instead of duplicating PNGs. Avoid overlapping conditions that force the mod to evaluate many rules for one item; merge them where possible. Specific rules should sit above general ones so the first match is the intended one.
Testing at Scale
After adding a batch of rules, reload with F3+T and spot-check a few items from each category rather than every single one. If the pack feels slow, look for rules with very broad conditions that match many items, since those are evaluated most often. Splitting a broad rule into narrower ones usually restores smoothness. Keep a short notes file listing which conditions map to which textures so future edits stay quick.
