Vanilla Pings Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I ping something?
Look directly at a block, mob, or dropped item and use the /ping command or press the ping hotkey (if you have the client mod installed). The marker will appear at that location and broadcast to nearby players.
Do my teammates need to install the mod to see my pings?
No—the mod works entirely on the server side, so teammates will see your markers and chat messages without installing anything. Installing the client mod on their end just gives them access to the hotkey for faster pinging.
Why can't I ping anything?
Check if you're within the ping range limit (configurable by the server operator) and if you've waited long enough since your last ping—there's a cooldown between pings. If markers aren't showing up at all, ask your server admin to run /vanillapings removeOld to clear stuck markers.
How do I know where a ping is if I can't see it?
The action bar will display a direction hint pointing you toward active markers within a certain distance. Chat messages also print the exact coordinates of the ping, so you can navigate there directly.
Can I ping through walls or water?
Yes—pings work through water and other liquid blocks without obstruction. However, you must have a direct line of sight to the target block or mob from your crosshair position.
What information shows up when I ping a dropped item?
The chat message displays the item name, any enchantments, and the stack count. If item counting is enabled, it will also show how many of that item are lying nearby within the configured range.
How long do pings last before they disappear?
Pings automatically despawn after a set duration (controlled by the server operator). Before disappearing, they flash to give you a visual warning that the marker is about to vanish.
Can I change what the ping marker looks like?
Yes—the server operator can use /vanillapings item to change the block or item displayed inside the marker armor stand, and toggle the glowing effect with /vanillapings glowing.
Why aren't my teammates hearing the ping sound?
Sound alerts can be toggled on or off with /vanillapings sound. If they're on but you still don't hear anything, check your Minecraft sound settings and make sure mob sounds aren't muted.
How do I change the language of ping messages?
Use /vanillapings language to switch the chat message language, or edit the lang setting in the configuration file and reload with /vanillapings reload.
