Universal Chat Bridge Plugin FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I know if the plugin is working after I restart the server?
Check your server logs for connection messages from the plugin—it will confirm when it successfully links to your Matterbridge instance. You can also send a test message in-game and watch for it to appear in your linked external chat channels.
What happens if I don't set a token in the config?
The plugin will still work, but your Matterbridge connection won't be secured—anyone who knows your server address could potentially send messages through it. It's strongly recommended to set a token to protect your relay.
Can I relay chat to multiple Discord servers at once?
Yes, as long as your Matterbridge setup has multiple gateways configured, you can point the plugin to different gateways by changing the gateway value in the config and restarting.
Why are join and leave messages not showing up in Discord?
Check that you've enabled those notifications in the config file and that your gateway name matches exactly what you set in Matterbridge—capitalization and spelling matter. Also verify your Matterbridge server is running and the plugin can reach it at the configured URL.
Do death messages include the cause of death?
Yes, the plugin broadcasts the full death message that appears in-game, which includes how the player died.
Can I turn off advancement notifications but keep death messages?
Yes, you can customize each event type independently in the config file—disable advancements while leaving deaths enabled, or adjust any combination of notifications to match your community's preferences.
What's the difference between the URL and gateway settings?
The URL is the network address where your Matterbridge server is running (like http://localhost:4242), while the gateway is the specific relay channel name you created inside Matterbridge that connects your platforms together.
Will the plugin work if my Matterbridge server is on a different machine?
Yes, as long as your Minecraft server can reach the Matterbridge machine over the network and you set the URL correctly (use the Matterbridge machine's IP address or hostname instead of localhost).
Can I customize the text format for level-up notifications?
Yes, the config file lets you customize the message text for level-up alerts, and you can set custom intervals for which levels trigger notifications instead of every single level.
What should I do if chat messages are relaying to Discord but Discord messages aren't showing in Minecraft?
Check that your Matterbridge gateway is configured to relay messages in both directions and that the plugin has permission to receive messages from your Matterbridge instance—verify the token matches on both sides.
