UltraVanilla Shaders FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

Why won't UltraVanilla Shaders load in my game?
UltraVanilla requires both Iris Shaders and Sodium to be installed first—the shader pack won't appear in your shader folder without them. Make sure you've installed both mods correctly and that they're compatible with your Minecraft version before trying to load UltraVanilla.
How do I turn on water reflections?
Open the shader options menu (usually Shift+O in-game) and look for the water reflection or reflection quality settings. Enable the option and adjust the reflection distance slider to control how far reflections render—lower values improve performance on potato PCs.
My shadows look weird or blocky, how do I fix them?
Open shader settings and find the shadow quality or shadow resolution option, then increase it for smoother shadows. You can also adjust shadow distance to control how far shadows render from your character—reducing this helps if you're getting frame drops.
Can I use UltraVanilla with other mods?
Yes, UltraVanilla works with most mods since it only affects rendering through Iris. Avoid mods that heavily modify lighting or rendering systems, and always test performance after adding new mods.
Why is my FPS dropping even though this is supposed to be low-end friendly?
Try lowering shadow distance and water reflection distance in the shader settings, or disable reflections entirely if needed. If that doesn't help, reduce your render distance or check that Sodium is optimizing your video settings correctly.
Does UltraVanilla change the way blocks and items look?
No—UltraVanilla is designed to keep the vanilla aesthetic intact and only upgrades lighting, shadows, and water reflections. Your blocks, textures, and overall world appearance stay the same.
How do I make shadows less dark or more visible?
Open shader settings and look for shadow brightness, shadow intensity, or ambient light options. Increasing ambient light or reducing shadow darkness will make shadows less harsh while keeping them visible.
Can I use UltraVanilla with a resource pack?
Yes, UltraVanilla works alongside resource packs without conflict. The shader only affects lighting and reflections, so your resource pack's textures and models will display normally.
What's the difference between this and heavy shader packs like Complementary?
UltraVanilla is optimized for older computers and maintains vanilla visuals with subtle enhancements, while heavy packs add dramatic lighting, bloom, and visual effects that require powerful GPUs. UltraVanilla trades visual intensity for smooth performance on low-end hardware.
Why do water reflections look different in different biomes?
Water reflection quality depends on your shader settings and what's around the water—reflections render nearby terrain and sky based on your reflection distance setting. Some biomes may show more or fewer reflections depending on the landscape complexity.
