Troubleshooting: Why Won't My Trim Apply in Trims Expanded

Check the Three Slots

If the Smithing Table output stays empty, the problem is almost always one of the three inputs. First, confirm the armor piece is a valid trim target (helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots). Second, confirm the middle slot holds an actual armor trim smithing template — not a netherite upgrade template or some other smithing template. Third, confirm the right slot holds a material the mod actually supports. The mod's materials are: Coal, Dragon's Breath, Echo Shard, Enchanted Golden Apple, Ender Pearl, Fire Charge, Glowstone Dust, Leather, Nether Brick, Prismarine Shard, Rabbit Hide, and Slime Ball, plus the vanilla ones.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a non-stackable item incorrectly: Dragon's Breath comes in a bottle, and Enchanted Golden Apple is a single item — make sure you are placing the item itself, not a container.
  • Mixing up Nether Brick (the item) with Nether Bricks (the block) or Nether Brick (item) variants. Only the item form works.
  • Forgetting that the template is consumed or required per application, depending on your game version's smithing rules.
  • Trying to trim an item that is not armor, such as an elytra or a tool.

Still Stuck?

Remove all items, close and reopen the Smithing Table, and re-add them one at a time. If a specific material refuses to work, try a different one from the list to confirm the table itself is functioning, then revisit the problematic material.
