How to Set Mobs on Fire with a Torch in Your Offhand

The Offhand Trick

The Torch Hit Mod lets you keep a torch in your offhand and still attack normally with your main-hand weapon or tool. When you land a hit, the mob catches fire for a short duration — shorter than a direct torch strike, but it stacks with your weapon's own damage.

1. Place a torch (or any torch-like item the mod recognizes) in your offhand slot.

2. Equip your sword, axe, or other tool in your main hand.

3. Attack a mob as you normally would.

4. Watch for the fire particles — the mob is now burning for a couple of seconds.

When This Is Worth It

This is ideal for mobs that take extra fire damage or panic while burning. It also helps against mobs that regenerate or heal, since the burn ticks interrupt that. Note that fire-immune mobs (like blazes or magma cubes) won't care, so switch to a direct weapon approach against them.

If you're using a soul torch in the offhand and have the Soul Fire'd mod installed, the burn becomes soul fire, which behaves differently against certain mobs. Without that mod, soul torches simply burn longer — which matters most against Piglins, who are especially afraid of it.
