Which Materials Can You Use to Trim Tools and What Colors They Give

The Five Trim Materials

The Tool Trims Data Pack supports exactly five trim materials. Each one applies a distinct color to the trim pattern on your tool:

  • Gold — a warm yellow/gold tone
  • Emerald — a green tone
  • Redstone — a red tone
  • Diamond — a light blue/cyan tone
  • Amethyst Shards — a purple tone

You do not need to match the material to the tool's tier. A wooden sword can take a Diamond trim, and a Netherite pickaxe can take a Redstone trim. The material only affects the trim's color, not the tool's stats.

Combining Template and Material

The template (Linear, Tracks, Charge, or Frost) controls the shape of the pattern, and the material controls its color. That means you have four patterns times five colors to mix and match. To apply a combination, use the Toolsmithing Table: tool in the base slot, template in the template slot, material in the addition slot. The result is a trimmed tool that keeps its original enchantments and durability.

Practical Tips

If you want a matching set, pick one template and one material and apply it across your whole kit. If you want each tool to look unique, vary the template per tool while keeping the material consistent, or vice versa. Stock up on your chosen material before you start, since each trim consumes one unit.
