Tool Trims Data Pack FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I even start trimming my tools?
Craft or find a Toolsmithing Table, then place your tool, a Tool Trim Smithing Template, and a trim material in it to apply the trim. You'll need one of the four templates (Linear, Tracks, Charge, or Frost) before you can trim anything.
Where do I get the Tool Trim Smithing Templates?
The four templates — Linear, Tracks, Charge, and Frost — are obtained through gameplay, typically from loot or crafting depending on the template. Check the advancements tab; unlocking them often points you toward where each template comes from.
What materials can I use to trim my tools and what colors do they give?
You can trim with Gold, Emerald, Redstone, Diamond, or Amethyst Shards. Each material applies its own distinct color palette to the tool's trim pattern, so pick the one that matches the look you want.
Can I put a trim on any tool or weapon?
The data pack supports 39 trimmable weapons and tools, so most common tools and weapons work. If a specific item isn't trimmable, it simply won't accept a template in the Toolsmithing Table.
I put my tool in the Toolsmithing Table but nothing happens — what am I doing wrong?
Make sure you have all three pieces: the tool, a Tool Trim Smithing Template, and a valid trim material. Missing any one of them, or using a material that isn't Gold, Emerald, Redstone, Diamond, or Amethyst Shards, will stop the trim from applying.
Can I remove a trim once I've applied it?
Trims are cosmetic and applied permanently to that item in the smithing process, so plan your material choice before confirming. If you want a different look, you'll typically need to apply the trim to a fresh copy of the tool.
How do I get the Shiny Tools and Tools of All Styles advancements?
Shiny Tools triggers when you trim a tool for the first time, and Tools of All Styles requires you to trim tools using every available trim material. Just keep trimming with each of the five materials to complete both.
How do I get the custom trim items in Creative mode?
Run the command /function tooltrims:custom_items while in Creative to spawn the data pack's custom items directly into your inventory. This is the fastest way to preview trims without gathering materials.
Does this data pack work with other data packs or on a server?
It's a data pack, so it works alongside other data packs and on servers as long as it's installed in the world's datapacks folder. Conflicts are rare, but another pack that changes smithing recipes or the Toolsmithing Table could interfere.
Will Tool Trims cause lag or performance issues?
No — trims are cosmetic and the pack only adds a block, templates, and advancements, so performance impact is negligible. Any lag you notice is almost certainly from something else in your world.
