How to Trim Your Tools and Weapons with the Tool Trims Data Pack
Getting the Smithing Templates
Before you can trim anything, you need a Tool Trim Smithing Template. The data pack adds four templates: Linear, Tracks, Charge, and Frost. These are the patterns that decide the visual style of the trim, while the material you feed into the smithing process decides the color. If you are playing in Creative, run /function tooltrims:custom_items to pull the templates and other custom items straight into your inventory. In Survival, you will need to find or craft them the way the data pack intends.
Using the Toolsmithing Table
Place down the new Toolsmithing Table block. Open it and you will see a smithing-style interface. Put your tool or weapon in the base slot, add a Tool Trim Smithing Template, then add your chosen trim material. The five supported materials are Gold, Emerald, Redstone, Diamond, and Amethyst Shards. Each one produces a different colored trim on the tool. Confirm the operation and your tool keeps all of its enchantments, durability, and name — only the trim appearance changes.
What You Can Trim
There are 39 trimmable weapons and tools supported, covering the standard sword, axe, pickaxe, shovel, and hoe tiers plus additional gear. If a tool does not accept a trim, it is simply not on the supported list. Experiment with different template and material combinations to find a look you like.
