How to Fix Jittery or Unsmooth Third Person Camera Movement
The Common Cause
If your third-person camera stutters, jumps, or interpolates poorly, the most likely cause is Optifine's Fast Math setting. It trades precision for speed and can break the smooth camera motion this mod provides. The fix is simple and does not require removing Optifine.
Disabling Fast Math
Open Options, then Video Settings, then Performance. Find the Fast Math option and set it to off. Close the menus and test your third-person view again by pressing F5. Camera movement during Z-based offset and distance changes should now be noticeably smoother.
Other Things to Check
If it is still choppy, lower your render distance or reduce other heavy video settings, since third-person rendering shows more of the world at once. Also avoid holding Z while sprinting through dense terrain — the camera can clip into blocks and appear to jerk. Pull the camera distance out a little with the mouse wheel to reduce clipping.
When It Is Working Right
Smooth behavior means: F5 toggles cleanly, CapsLock glides between biases, and Z plus mouse or wheel produces fluid motion. If any of these snap harshly, revisit the Fast Math setting first.
Quick Recap
- Turn off Fast Math under Performance.
- Lower render distance if still choppy.
- Increase camera distance to avoid block clipping.
