The Fossils FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
What pickaxe do I need to mine fossil ores?
You need at least an iron pickaxe to successfully mine fossil ores. Stone pickaxes and weaker tools won't work, so make sure you're equipped before heading underground to search for fossils.
Where do I find fossil ores in my world?
Fossil ores generate deep underground, with older fossils spawning at greater depths. You'll need to dig down significantly to find them, and older time periods will be located lower than more recent ones.
How do I rotate fossil pieces when placing them?
Right-click a placed fossil piece with an empty hand to rotate it clockwise. Keep right-clicking until the fossil is oriented the way you want it for your display.
Can I display fossils underwater?
Yes, the mod lets you place fossils underwater to create aquatic displays. This is useful for building exhibits featuring sea life and other aquatic creatures from ancient times.
How many pieces do large dinosaur skeletons need?
Different skeletons require different numbers of pieces to complete—some need 5, others need 10, 15, or even 20 pieces. Larger and more impressive dinosaurs will require more pieces to fully assemble.
What happens when I complete a full skeleton?
You'll receive an advancement that shows the translated name of the animal you've completed. This helps you track your progress and confirms you've successfully assembled the skeleton.
How do I know which fossil is which when I'm mining?
Every single fossil and slab has a unique texture, so you can identify your finds quickly by looking at them. This makes it easier to organize and sort your collection.
Can I build different types of museum exhibits?
Yes, you can build custom museum rooms ranging from mammal halls to ceratopsian exhibits and beyond. The variety of over 500 fossils gives you plenty of options for themed displays.
Do fossils from different time periods spawn in different locations?
Yes, the mod generates 14 different fossil ores, and older fossils spawn deeper underground than more recent ones. This means you'll need to dig to different depths depending on which time period you want to explore.
What's the oldest time period included in this mod?
The mod covers over 580 million years of history, starting from early sea life and progressing through various time periods up to famous creatures like the T-Rex. You can dig up remains from nearly the entire fossil record.
