How to Safely Navigate Tectonic's Oceanside and Icy Cliffs

Recognizing Cliff Terrain

Tectonic generates cliffs where coastal terrain drops steeply into the ocean, and these often form large overhangs. A special variant, the Icy Cliffs, features ice stalactites hanging beneath overhangs and ice stalagmites rising from below. You will usually spot cliffs by the sudden color change from beach or grass to stone or ice, plus a sharp drop in your F3 y-level as you approach the water.

Crossing Cliffs Without Dying

  • Never sprint off the edge — overhangs mean the ground below may not be where you expect.
  • Carry a water bucket: placing water at the lip lets you descend safely and climb back with a boat or by swimming up.
  • Use scaffolding or a stack of blocks to bridge out over the void when you need to cross a gap.
  • In Icy Cliffs, watch for ice formations underneath overhangs — they can block your fall path or hide caves.

If you are exploring by boat, hug the cliff base rather than the top; the waterline often reveals cave entrances and exposed ores. For base-building, the flat tops of cliffs make excellent defensible sites, but bring fences early because mobs can path up the slopes. Always light the underside of overhangs if you plan to camp there, since darkness under the ledge spawns hostile mobs.
