Tectonic Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I know if Tectonic is actually working in my world?
Generate a fresh world and look for mountains that stretch for thousands of blocks and reach well above y=200, or scan a coastline for steep cliffs with overhangs. If your terrain looks like vanilla, the datapack/mod isn't loaded or wasn't applied to that world.
Why does my old world look unchanged after adding Tectonic?
Worldgen changes only apply to chunks that haven't been generated yet, so already-explored areas keep their old terrain. You need to travel into ungenerated chunks or start a new world to see the new biomes and terrain.
Can I use Tectonic with other worldgen or biome mods?
Tectonic is designed to work alongside many other datapacks and worldgen mods, but overlapping terrain or biome overhauls can conflict and cause odd generation. Check the pack's compatibility notes and test on a fresh world before committing to a long-term save.
Does Tectonic work on a server, and do all players need it?
It can run on a server, and clients generally need the same worldgen setup to see terrain correctly. If it's installed as a datapack on the server, vanilla clients can usually connect, but mismatches can cause visual or chunk errors.
Why is my game lagging or taking forever to load chunks with Tectonic?
The taller mountains and larger biome variety mean more complex terrain to generate, which increases worldgen load. Lower your render/simulation distance, pre-generate the world if possible, and avoid flying fast through unexplored terrain.
How do I find Tectonic's new biomes?
Just explore—new biomes and biome variants generate naturally alongside the terrain, often near mountains, coasts, and rivers. Using a biome-finding command or map mod can help you locate specific ones faster.
Why can't I find any mountains near my spawn?
Tectonic mountains are meant to be large, distinct ranges rather than scattered peaks, so they may not appear right at spawn. Travel further out and look for long, wide elevated regions instead of isolated hills.
What's the best way to climb Tectonic's huge mountains without dying?
Bring plenty of blocks, a water bucket, and slow-falling or feather-falling gear, and watch for steep drops and overhangs. Don't sprint-jump near edges, and set up small shelters as you go since the peaks are far from the ground.
Are Tectonic's oceanside cliffs dangerous to build near?
Yes—cliffs often form large overhangs and steep drops straight into the ocean, and Icy Cliffs hide ice stalactites and stalagmites underneath. Build back from the edge and light up the area so you don't fall or get impaled.
How do I find and use an Underground River?
Underground Rivers generate where a river meets cave systems, so look for water flowing through caverns rather than on the surface. They're useful for travel and fishing underground, but bring a boat and light sources to avoid mobs and dead ends.
