How to Choose a Base Location in Tectonic's New Biomes

Matching Biome to Playstyle

Tectonic adds over 25 new biomes and variants, and the terrain shape matters as much as the biome type. Mountain biomes give you dramatic views and natural defenses but limited flat ground. Oceanside cliffs offer coastal access and overhang shelter but risk of falls. Inland valleys and river-adjacent biomes are the easiest for farming and villager trading because the ground is flatter and water is nearby.

Practical Checklist Before You Build

  • Stand at your candidate spot and check F3 for y-level and biome name.
  • Look up: are there overhangs or cliffs above that could drop mobs or gravel on you?
  • Look down: is the ground solid, or is there a cave or underground river beneath?
  • Check water access within a short walk for farming and travel.
  • Confirm you are not on a slope that will make redstone or rail builds painful.

For survival players, a plateau partway up a mountain or a flat shelf above a cliff gives the best mix of safety and scenery. For builders, a valley floor near a river offers room to expand. Avoid building directly under Icy Cliff overhangs unless you enjoy clearing ice stalactites, and avoid the very top of tall peaks where snow and cold biomes limit crop growth.
