How to Rename Items Cheaply at the Anvil with Tax Free Levels

Why Renaming Is Now Cheap

In vanilla Minecraft, renaming an item at the anvil costs experience based on your current level, which can make it surprisingly expensive once you've gained a few levels. Tax Free Levels changes this so that renaming an item always costs a single level, no matter how high your experience level is. This makes naming your gear, tools, and collectibles practical again.

Step-by-Step

1. Place an anvil and right-click it to open the anvil interface.

2. Put the item you want to rename in the left slot.

3. Type the new name into the text field above the result slot.

4. Check the cost shown on the right side of the result slot — it should read as a single level rather than scaling with your XP.

5. Take the renamed item out of the result slot to confirm the rename and spend the level.

Tips

• Because the cost is flat, you can rename items freely even at very high levels without worrying about the price ballooning.
• Renaming does not consume the item's prior anvil work penalty in a way that blocks you, since the mod also removes the "Too Expensive!" cap.
• If you plan to rename many items, keep a small stockpile of experience so you always have at least one level available.
