Tax Free Levels Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I know Tax Free Levels is actually working?
Open an anvil or enchanting table with a high experience level and check the cost shown in the interface. If the price stays flat instead of climbing with your level, the mod is active. You can also try renaming any item, which should only cost a single level.
Why is renaming an item still costing more than one level?
Renaming costs one level only when no other operations are combined with it. If you rename and repair or rename and enchant in the same anvil use, the other operations add their own costs on top.
Does Tax Free Levels remove the 'Too Expensive!' message on anvils?
Yes, the mod removes the vanilla cap that blocks anvil operations once the cost exceeds the limit. You can still perform the operation even if the displayed cost would normally be rejected.
Do I still need to grind experience with this mod installed?
You still need experience to pay for enchanting and repairing, but the amount no longer scales with your level. Grinding is less punishing because a high level won't inflate your costs, so you can stockpile levels without penalty.
Does the mod change how much XP I get from mining, mobs, or fishing?
No, Tax Free Levels only changes the cost side of anvil and enchanting table operations. Experience sources and drop rates stay exactly as they are in vanilla.
Can I combine enchanted books past the normal level limit with this mod?
Yes, the removal of the 'Too Expensive!' cap means combinations that would normally be blocked can go through. The cost is calculated at a flat rate rather than scaling with your current level.
Does Tax Free Levels work on a server, or only in singleplayer?
It works on servers as long as the mod is installed on the server side. Clients connecting to a modded server generally don't need it installed locally for the cost changes to apply.
Will this mod conflict with other enchanting or anvil mods?
It can conflict with mods that also rewrite anvil or enchanting cost logic, since both may try to control the same calculation. If costs look wrong or the 'Too Expensive!' limit returns, check for overlapping mods and test with them removed.
Does Tax Free Levels affect the enchanting table's level requirements?
The mod targets the cost curve above level 30 so enchanting and anvil use stay affordable at high levels. The bookshelf requirement and the standard enchantment selection behavior of the enchanting table are unchanged.
Does this mod hurt performance or cause lag?
No, it only adjusts cost calculations when you use an anvil or enchanting table, so there is no ongoing performance impact. Any lag you notice is almost certainly from another mod or the world itself.
