How to Combine Enchanted Books and Gear Past the 'Too Expensive!' Limit

What Changed

Vanilla anvils refuse operations once the prior work penalty pushes the cost above the "Too Expensive!" threshold, which is a common frustration when stacking many enchantments onto one item. Tax Free Levels removes that cap and keeps the cost from scaling with your player level, so you can keep building up an item.

Combining Books and Items

1. Open the anvil interface.

2. Place your target item in the left slot and the enchanted book or second item in the right slot.

3. Verify the enchantments you want will transfer by checking the preview on the result slot.

4. Confirm the operation by taking the result — the mod allows it even if vanilla would have labeled it too expensive.

Repairing Heavily Used Gear

1. Put your damaged tool, weapon, or armor in the left slot.

2. Add the matching repair material (or a duplicate item) in the right slot.

3. Take the repaired result; the cost stays flat instead of climbing with your level.

Tips

  • Because the cap is gone, you can chain multiple combines onto the same item to reach high enchantment levels.
  • Watch your available experience — even flat costs add up across many operations, so bank some XP before a big combining session.
  • Renaming before or after combining is cheap, so use it to keep track of which gear is which.
