Sword Blocking vs Shields: Which Should You Use?
Damage Reduction Compared
A shield blocks the vast majority of a frontal hit when
raised, while a sword block only softens the blow. That makes the shield the better choice when you are standing still and expecting a big hit, such as a creeper detonation or a Ravager charge. The sword's advantage is availability: you almost always have a sword in hand during combat, so you can block instantly without swapping items.
When the Sword Wins
Use sword blocking when you are mid-fight and cannot afford to switch hotbar slots. If a zombie lunges while you are attacking, tapping the use key keeps your sword equipped and cuts the damage. This is especially useful in tight spaces where swapping to a shield would cost you a hit. The sword block also lets you keep attacking immediately after the block ends, since the sword never leaves your hand.
Practical Loadout Advice
Carry a shield in your off-hand for planned fights and rely on sword blocking for emergencies. If you play without a shield — for example, in a two-handed or dual-wield setup — sword blocking becomes your only defensive option, so practice the timing. Remember that a
raised sword still counts as a held sword for attacking, so you can drop the block and swing in the same motion.
