How to Adjust Proximity Voice Chat Distance and Audio Settings

Understanding Proximity Chat

SVC uses proximity-based voice, meaning how far away a player is in the world determines how loudly you hear them. This is the core feature that makes voice chat feel natural in Minecraft. The distance at which voices fade out is configurable, and understanding these settings helps you tune the experience for your playstyle — whether you want a tight, realistic range or a wider range for large group activities.

Changing Voice Distance

Open the voice chat settings menu using your configured keybind. Look for the voice distance or proximity settings section. There you can adjust the maximum distance at which you can hear other players. Increasing it lets you communicate across larger areas, useful for building together or group mining. Decreasing it makes conversations more private and localized. Keep in mind that the server may enforce its own maximum distance, so your setting might be capped. If changes don't seem to take effect, the server's configuration is likely overriding yours.

Fine-Tuning Audio Quality

In the same settings menu, you'll find options for audio quality and noise suppression. Enabling noise suppression helps filter out background hum, fans, or keyboard noise. If your voice sounds robotic or cuts out, try lowering the audio quality setting — higher quality uses more bandwidth and can struggle on weak connections. Adjust microphone gain carefully: too high causes distortion, too low makes you inaudible. Test with another player after each change.
