Styled Nicknames Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I set my nickname in the first place?
Use /nick set to give yourself a nickname, optionally adding formatting tags for colors or gradients. If you just want to remove it, run /nick clear or /nick reset to go back to your normal username.
What prefix do I need before color codes?
By default the mod uses # as its formatting prefix, so tags look like #red or #gradient rather than the old & codes. You can change this default prefix in styled-nicknames.json if you prefer a different symbol.
Why does my nickname show the raw tags instead of colors?
Formatting is only parsed when the tag matches an enabled formatting tag in the config. Check styled-nicknames.json to confirm the tag you used is listed and that formatting tags aren't disabled entirely.
Can I still use old &c style color codes?
Yes, but only if old-style formatting codes are enabled in the config. When that option is off, & codes are treated as plain text and won't color anything.
How do I make a gradient or rainbow nickname?
Use the mod's gradient tag with two or more colors, for example a start color and an end color, and the mod blends them across the name. Rainbow effects use the same gradient system with multiple color stops instead of just two.
My nickname isn't showing in chat, what's wrong?
Make sure the chat display option is enabled in the config, since nickname display in chat can be toggled separately from the player list. If it's on and still not working, another chat-formatting mod may be overriding the name.
Why doesn't my nickname appear in the tab/player list?
Player list display is a separate option and is known to conflict with some mods that also rewrite tab names. Try disabling those conflicting mods or turning the player list option off and on to test.
How do I set or clear someone else's nickname as an admin?
Admins use the same /nick command targeting another player, for example /nick set to assign one and /nick clear to remove it. You need the appropriate permission to change other players' nicknames.
Is there a length limit on nicknames?
Yes, the config sets a maximum nickname length, and players over that limit are blocked. Trusted users can be given an override permission to exceed the normal maximum.
Does this mod hurt performance or break other mods?
It's lightweight since it only rewrites display names, so performance impact is minimal. The main compatibility concern is the player list option, which can clash with mods that also modify tab names.
