Troubleshooting Low Frame Rates with Shaders Enabled
Identify the Performance Bottleneck
Open Shader Options and systematically disable features to find what's causing lag. Start by turning off shadows, then reflections, then foliage effects. Frame rate should improve noticeably when the culprit is disabled.
Reduce Shadow Settings First
Shadows typically have the biggest performance impact. Lower shadow distance significantly—you'll maintain nearby shadow detail while gaining frames. Reduce shadow quality/resolution as a secondary step.
Adjust Reflection Distance
If reflections are the problem, cut reflection distance before disabling reflections entirely. This preserves the visual effect while reducing computation.
Check Your Hardware Expectations
Steadfast Shaders is optimized for low-end systems, but extremely old hardware may still struggle with all features maxed. Disable features you don't notice or care about—if you never look at water, disable reflections.
Test in Different Environments
Performance varies by location. Open sky areas typically run faster than dense forests. If lag only happens in specific biomes, that's normal and expected.
