How to Tell If a Mob Is Visible or Hidden Using Sound Alone

The Core Skill

Sound Physics Mod lets you determine whether a mob can be directly seen, is just around a corner, or is sealed in a closed-off area, all without looking. The three cues are direction (panning), distance (attenuation), and occlusion (muffling and absorption).

Step-by-Step Practice

1. Stand in a corridor with a mob on the other side of a wall. Listen: the sound will be dull and absorbed, with reduced high frequencies. That is occlusion.

2. Move so the mob is around a corner but in the same open space. The sound becomes clearer and brighter, with a reverb tail, but the panning still points toward the corner rather than straight at the mob.

3. Step into the same room as the mob. The sound is now direct, loud, and centered on its actual position.

4. Repeat with a closed door between you and the mob, then with the door open, and note how the muffling changes.

Practical Tips

  • Crouch and stay still while listening; your own footsteps mask the cues.
  • Turn off music and minimize other ambient noise.
  • Remember that stereo sound files will not respond to any of this, so if one mob always sounds adjacent, treat that sound as unreliable and rely on other cues such as particles or block updates.
  • In multiplayer, other players' voices and footsteps follow the same rules, so you can track allies through walls by their muffled audio.
