Sophisticated Storage FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get started with Sophisticated Storage?
Craft a basic Chest or Barrel first, then place it and right-click to open it. From there, craft the tier upgrade items to move your storage up through Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. Upgrade modules like Filter, Compacting, and Smelting slot into the upgrade panel inside the storage GUI.
How do I upgrade a Sophisticated Storage chest to the next tier?
Open the chest or barrel, place the matching tier upgrade item (like Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade) into the upgrade slot, and it converts in place while keeping its contents. You can also use the Storage Tool to upgrade blocks directly.
How does the Storage Controller work?
Place a Storage Controller and connect nearby Sophisticated Storage blocks to it using Storage Connectors. The controller then exposes every linked inventory as one combined interface, so you can pull from or push to the whole network at once.
What is Storage I/O used for?
Storage I/O acts as an input/output endpoint for your Storage Controller network, letting hoppers, pipes, or other automation insert and extract items from the whole connected storage. Point your automation at the I/O block instead of individual chests.
How do I extend my reach and pick up items automatically?
Install a Magnet Upgrade in a storage block to pull nearby dropped items into it, and a Pickup Upgrade to collect items as you walk over them. Higher-tier versions of these upgrades increase the effective range and pickup behavior.
How do I use the Storage Tool?
The Storage Tool lets you pick up, rotate, and reconfigure Sophisticated Storage blocks without breaking them, preserving their contents and upgrades. Right-click to pick up and place, and use it to apply tier upgrades on the fly.
What are Limited Barrels and why would I use them?
Limited Barrels are variants that only accept a restricted set of items, useful for sorting systems, farms, or shops where you want a barrel to hold exactly one resource. They come in numbered tiers (Limited Barrel 1 through 4) matching each material tier.
How do Filter, Compacting, Smelting, and Void upgrades work?
Slot these modules into a storage block's upgrade panel: Filter restricts what the block accepts, Compacting merges items into their block forms, Smelting (and Blasting/Smoking) cooks items on insert, and Void deletes overflow. Advanced versions of each module handle more slots or more complex rules.
Why isn't my Storage Controller connecting to my chests?
Make sure each chest or barrel is linked with a Storage Connector and that the controller is within range of the connected blocks. Also check that the block isn't a Limited Barrel variant that's rejecting the connection, and that no upgrade is blocking the slot the controller needs.
Does Sophisticated Storage hurt performance with lots of chests?
Individual storage blocks are lightweight, but large controller networks with many connected inventories and heavy automation can add tick cost. Keep networks reasonably sized, avoid stacking many hoppers into one I/O, and use Filter upgrades to reduce unnecessary item movement.
