Using Hay Bales as a Trap or Mob Damage-Free Zone

Why bales change mob behavior

Since hay bales cancel fall damage for every entity, not just the player, they are a tool for controlling where mobs survive a drop. This is useful when you want mobs alive at the bottom of a fall — for farms, pens, or collection areas — instead of dead.

1. Build your drop (a spawn platform, a pit, a funnel) as normal.

2. Place hay bales as the landing floor at the bottom.

3. Mobs that fall in arrive unharmed and can be moved, sorted, or stored.

Practical setups

  • Mob pens: drop animals down a shaft onto bales to move them between levels without killing them.
  • Item collection: dropped items are unaffected by fall damage anyway, but a bale floor keeps the area tidy and doubles as a safe player entrance.
  • Player traps: a pit with a bale floor is a non-lethal holding area — useful on servers where you want to detain rather than kill.
  • Combined with a kill mechanism: if you *do* want damage, put the bale pad to one side and a normal floor or hazard on the other, then route mobs accordingly.

Remember the bale only protects the top face. Mobs pushed against the side of a bale still take normal fall damage from the block they actually land on.
