Softer Hay Bales Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I make hay bales actually negate fall damage?
Just place hay bales at the bottom of your drop and land on them — the mod makes them cancel fall damage on contact, no configuration needed. Make sure the bale is the block you actually touch, not a block next to it.
How many hay bales deep do I need for a safe landing?
A single hay bale is enough to negate fall damage with this mod, so you don't need to stack them for safety. Stack more only if you want a thicker-looking landing pad for builds.
Does landing on hay bales work from any height?
Yes — the mod removes fall damage entirely on hay bale landing regardless of how far you fell. You can jump from build limit down to a bale and walk away fine.
Why am I still taking fall damage when I land on hay bales?
You're probably landing on the block beside or under the bale, or clipping the edge of a neighboring block on the way down. Clear the column above the bale and aim for the center of the top face.
Do I need to be sneaking or holding anything to land safely?
No — the negate-fall-damage effect is automatic on contact with the bale. Just fall onto it normally.
Can I use hay bales to make a mob-safe drop or trap?
Yes — mobs that land on hay bales also avoid fall damage, so you can build drop chutes that deliver mobs intact to a collection or killing area. Pair it with a water stream or open shaft so mobs actually land on the bale.
Do hay bales still work for feeding animals or as crafting material with this mod?
Yes — the mod only changes fall damage behavior, so hay bales keep their normal uses like feeding horses, lamas, and crafting. You can use the same bale as both a landing pad and a food source.
Is this mod compatible with other mods that change fall damage?
It generally works alongside most mods, but another mod that overrides fall damage handling could conflict with the bale effect. If landings stop working, test with only this mod enabled to isolate the conflict.
Does the mod affect performance or cause lag?
No — it's a small behavior tweak with no ticking blocks or worldgen changes, so it has effectively no performance impact. Any lag you see is coming from something else.
Can I make a leap-of-faith spot that looks intentional in my build?
Yes — recess the bale into the ground or surround it with a low wall, carpet, or trapdoor frame so it reads as a designed landing pad rather than a random block. A single bale in a courtyard or tower base looks deliberate and still saves you.
