Building a Safe Drop Chute or Elevator Landing

Use bales as the floor of your shaft

A vertical drop shaft is the fastest way down a base, but vanilla fall damage makes it lethal. Line the bottom of the shaft with hay bales so every descent ends safely.

1. Dig or build your vertical shaft from the top floor to the bottom floor.

2. At the bottom, replace the floor blocks with hay bales across the full footprint of the shaft.

3. Leave the shaft open — no water, no slime, no ladder needed.

4. Test by dropping a single block of gravel or an item down first to confirm it lands on the bale pad.

Combining with other movement

  • You can sprint-jump into the shaft and still land safely.
  • Elytra users can dive straight into the pad without pulling up.
  • If you use a bubble column or water stream to go *up*, keep the bale pad as the bottom floor so a mis-timed exit is not fatal.
  • For a multi-level base, put a bale pad at the bottom of each drop and leave a gap in the floor above it.

Because the mod negates damage entirely rather than softening it, you never need to calculate a safe height. Any drop onto the pad works, from a two-block hop to a fall from build limit.
