How to Use Entity Counts to Diagnose Lag
One of the most useful
things the
Sodium Extra Information mod shows is how many entities exist and how many are actually being rendered. That split is the key to finding lag sources.
Total vs Rendered Entities
The total entity count includes everything loaded in your current chunks — mobs, items, armor stands, minecarts, and so on. The rendered count is only what the game is drawing on screen right now. A large gap between the two is normal when you are facing away from a crowded area. What matters is watching how each number behaves as you move.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis
First, stand still in a spot that feels laggy and note both numbers. Next, turn to face different directions and watch the rendered count change — if it jumps sharply when you look toward a
particular area, something there is heavy on entities. Then walk toward that area and watch the total count. If the total keeps climbing as you approach, you have found a concentration of entities, such as an unlit cave full of mobs, a dropped-item pile, or a large farm.
Acting on What You Find
Light up dark areas to stop mob spawning, collect or despawn loose items, and reduce unnecessary entities like decorative armor stands. Recheck the counts afterward — a drop in the rendered number usually means smoother frames. Use the overlay as a before-and-after gauge rather than a one-time reading.
