Why Are My Particles Disappearing? Fixing Over-Aggressive Culling
Common Causes
If particles vanish too soon — like torch flames flickering out at medium range or potion effects cutting off — Smart Particles is culling them more aggressively than you'd like. This usually happens when the particle distance is set too low or camera culling is too strict.
Step-by-Step Fixes
1. Open the mod config and increase the particle distance value. This is the single biggest lever.
2. If you use a narrow FOV or play in third person, disable Smart Camera Culling temporarily — it can remove particles you actually want to see at screen edges.
3. Check whether line-of-sight culling is hiding particles behind transparent blocks like glass or leaves. Some configs treat these as opaque.
4. If a specific mod's particles (magic auras, spell effects) disappear while vanilla ones look fine, look for a per-mod whitelist or exclusion list in the config and add that mod.
When to Leave It Alone
Some culling is normal and desirable — you genuinely don't need to see distant rain droplets. Only adjust settings if particles you're actively looking at are being removed. Test in a controlled spot like a lit room with a few torches before tweaking further.
