Smart Particles Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I know if Smart Particles is actually running?
Open the mod's config screen from the Mods list and check that the culling toggles are enabled, then walk into a particle-heavy area like a Nether portal or a rainstorm and watch your frame rate. If your FPS climbs noticeably while particles still appear near you, the mod is working.
What does Smart Particle Culling actually do?
It decides which particles are worth rendering each frame, keeping the ones closest to you and removing distant ones you wouldn't notice. This happens continuously, so the particle count on screen stays low without you manually deleting anything.
How does Smart Camera Culling differ from regular particle culling?
Camera culling specifically removes particles that fall outside your current view, like anything behind you or off to the side of your screen. Regular culling handles distance, so the two systems work together to cut down on wasted rendering.
Why did all my particles disappear after installing this mod?
Your culling settings are probably too aggressive, which usually means the distance threshold is set very low or camera culling is removing too much. Open the config and raise the particle distance or loosen the culling strength until particles near you reappear.
Does Smart Particles work with particles from other mods?
Yes, it manages vanilla particles and modded particles the same way, so you don't need separate configuration per mod. If a specific mod's particles look wrong, check that mod's own particle settings before blaming Smart Particles.
Will this mod break my shaders or make them look weird?
Smart Particles is client-side and only removes particles, so it doesn't change shader rendering itself. Some shader packs add their own particle effects, and those may be culled too, so test with your shader on and adjust the distance if effects vanish.
How do I configure Smart Particles for the best FPS?
Lower the particle distance so only close particles render, and make sure camera culling is on to drop anything off-screen. If you still see stutter, reduce the maximum particle count the mod allows at once.
Is Smart Particles safe to use on a multiplayer server?
Yes, it's client-side only, so it doesn't send anything to the server or change gameplay for other players. You can use it on any server that allows client-side mods.
Can I turn off Smart Particles for specific particle types?
The mod focuses on culling by distance and visibility rather than per-particle-type blacklists, so you generally can't whitelist individual effects. If you need a specific particle to always show, keep it close to you or raise the culling distance.
Why does my FPS not improve even with Smart Particles installed?
Particles might not be your bottleneck, so check whether your frame drops happen in particle-heavy moments or all the time. If FPS is low everywhere, the issue is likely elsewhere, like render distance, entity count, or shaders.
